Description of dance styles
Contemporarydance is a genre of concert dance that employs compositional philosophy, rather than choreography, to guide unchoreographed movement. It uses dance techniques and methods found in ballet, modern dance and postmodern dance, and it also draws from other philosophies of movement that are outside the realm of classical dance technique. Contemporary is a popular dance form used by contestants in the popular TV series "So You Think You Can Dance". .
Ballet is a formalized kind of performance dance. It is a highly technical style of dance that incorporates the foundational techniques for many other dance forms. Ballet also focuses on point work, flowing, precise acrobatic movements, and often presenting the dancers in the conventional short white French tutu. This genre is watched in theatre in productions like "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker".
Spanish dance, namely Flamenco, is a highly-expressive dance form. The flamenco is a solo dance characterized by hand clapping, percussive footwork, and intricate hand, arm and body movements. With roots in Indian, Arabic, Spanish cultures, flamenco dance is known for its sweeping arm movements and rhythmic feet stomping. The steps a dancer performs are dependent on the traditions of the song being played.
Tap is an exciting form of dance in which dancers wear special shoes equipped with metal taps. Tap dancers use their feet like drums to create rhythmic patterns and timely beats. The term "tap dancing" is derived from the tapping sound produced when the small metal plates on the dancer's shoes touch a hard floor or surface.
